
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the used EV that makes the most sense on paper, and the one that comes with the longest list of asterisks. It’s handsome, it charges at 800 volts, it’s properly spacious inside, and it’s already tumbling in value. It has also been at the centre of one of the decade’s biggest EV recall stories, and if you don’t know what to look for, you can end up with a $60,000 car that won’t charge its own 12-volt battery.
Here’s how to buy a used Hyundai Ioniq 5 in Australia without getting stung: which variants to chase, which years to avoid, and exactly what to check before you pay.
Why the Ioniq 5 is worth a look
Cards on the table: when it works, the Ioniq 5 is the best-driving EV for the money on the Australian used market. It’s one of only two cars sold here that can take an 800-volt DC charge (the other is a Porsche Taycan), which means a real-world 10 to 80% charge in around 17 minutes 19 seconds on a 350kW charger. That’s the measured time on Australian chargers, not the brochure figure.
The cabin is genuinely clever, the ride is suspiciously good for something on 20-inch wheels, and the V2L (vehicle-to-load) port will run a fridge, a camp site or an entire job site at up to 3.6kW. That last bit is worth more than it sounds if you’re out of town and the power goes off.
New, the 2026 base RWD starts at $76,200 before on-roads and the N-Line Premium AWD at $91,700 (Carsales 2026 pricing). Used, early 2022 to 2023 Australian-delivered cars now list from around $45,000 to $55,000 depending on variant and kilometres, and late-2024 demos have been sighted at around $67,000 drive-away. That’s a huge chunk of depreciation in three years on a car that’s barely changed mechanically.
The variants: which one to buy
Australian Ioniq 5s have come in three core variants since launch, with the range simplified for 2026. Here’s what you’re actually looking at on the used market:
- Standard Range RWD (2024 onwards): 58kWh battery, 384km WLTP. Cheaper to buy but short on range, so it only makes sense if you have home charging and never road trip. Added in 2024 as the new entry point.
- Long Range RWD (Dynamiq/Elite): 77.4kWh battery, 507km WLTP on 19s. This is the sweet spot. More range, cheaper to insure than the AWD, and the RWD ride is the nicer one to live with.
- Long Range AWD (Epiq/N-Line Premium): same 77.4kWh pack, 454 to 476km WLTP depending on wheels (EV Database specs). Quicker and grippier, but thirstier. Worth it only if you regularly drive in snow or tow.
- Ioniq 5 N: the hot one. 478kW, manufactured circus, $115k new. If you’re shopping used, you’re almost certainly not here yet.
For 2026, Hyundai axed the 63kWh battery and moved everything to an 84kWh pack. Good news if you’re buying the latest model; irrelevant if you’re shopping anything pre-2025.

The ICCU problem: you need to know this
This is the single most important section of this guide, so read it twice.
The Ioniq 5’s Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) is the box that keeps the 12V battery topped up while you’re driving and manages high-voltage charging. When it fails, and it has failed in significant numbers, the car loses the ability to charge, then drops into a “turtle mode” that limits you to walking pace, then refuses to start altogether.
Hyundai has issued multiple rounds of recalls globally covering 2022 to 2024 Ioniq 5s. In September 2025, Hyundai recalled approximately 145,000 US vehicles including the 2022 to 2024 Ioniq 5 over charging and drive power issues. Australian delivery vehicles from this period are built on the same platform with the same ICCU hardware.
The root cause, per Hyundai’s own filings, is a MOSFET transistor that can blow the ICCU fuse and stop the car charging the 12V battery. The fix is a combination of a software update, an inspection of the high-voltage fuse, and in some cases an ICCU and 12V battery replacement (Consumer Reports has a good summary).
When inspecting a used Ioniq 5:
- Ask for written confirmation that all recalls and software campaigns have been completed. Hyundai Australia service records will show this.
- Check the service history for any ICCU or 12V battery replacements. A replacement is a good sign (it’s been done), not a bad one.
- If the seller hasn’t had the recall work performed, budget for a Hyundai dealer visit before committing, and be aware parts have been back-ordered for weeks at a time.
Other known issues
- 12V battery drain: even on recall-completed cars, some owners report the 12V battery draining after the car sits for a week or two (What Car? reliability report). Factor in a trickle charger if you’re away often.
- Electronic parking brake recall: earlier cars had an EPB that could disengage itself. It’s a software fix, and it should already be done on any car you’re looking at.
- Cold-weather camera dropouts: below freezing, cameras and the associated driver-assist functions can fail. Less of an issue in most of Australia, but worth knowing if you’re in the Snowies.
- Relay key attacks: the Ioniq 5 has been targeted in Europe using relay devices that amplify the key fob signal. Keep the key in a Faraday pouch at home.
What to check on a test drive
Over and above the usual used-car checks (panel gaps, tyres, brakes, accident history via PPSR), the EV-specific ones:
- Plug it into a fast charger. Use a public DC fast charger, not a home wallbox. The Ioniq 5 should pull 150kW or more at a low state of charge on a 350kW unit. If it’s capped at 50kW or keeps kicking off the charger, that’s an ICCU or battery management red flag.
- State of health via OBD. For around $50 on Amazon, a Car Scanner ELM OBD2 adapter plus a compatible app will show you battery SoH. Anything under 90% on a 2022 or 2023 car warrants a conversation; under 85% is a pass unless the price reflects it.
- V2L port. Bring a small appliance and test the in-cabin and external V2L sockets. It’s a rarely used feature, which is why it’s often the first thing to be quietly broken.
- Service history. Hyundai’s recommended EV service is every 24 months or 30,000km. Any car with gaps in the log book is one where the recall work may also be missing.
- Battery warranty transfer. The 8-year/160,000km battery warranty (Hyundai Australia iCare) transfers to subsequent owners. Confirm the remaining period in writing; it’s the single biggest piece of cover on this car.

The Ioniq 5 is a brilliant car wearing the consequences of being first. If you can find a 2023 Long Range RWD with a clean service history, all recalls completed, and battery SoH above 92%, you’re buying the best-value EV on the Australian used market today. The charging speed alone makes road trips painless; you’ll be back at the wheel before the coffee you ordered arrives.
