
If you live an hour past the last set of traffic lights and you are weighing up a used EV vs PHEV in Australia, you have probably been given two answers by two very confident people. One says the EV will strand you in the middle of nowhere. The other says the PHEV is a compromise that does neither job well. Both are half right, and neither of them has to make your car payment. So here is the comparison: what each one actually costs to run, where each one falls over, and the single question that should decide it for a country buyer.
This is the head-to-head. If you want the deeper dive on whether the charging network can even get you home, that is a separate piece. Here we are just settling the used EV against the used plug-in hybrid.
What you are actually choosing between
Quick definitions, because the badges are deliberately confusing.
A BEV (battery electric vehicle, or just “EV”) is pure electric. No engine, no petrol, no exhaust. You plug it in, it drives, that is the whole story.
A PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) has a small battery and an electric motor plus a normal petrol engine. You charge the battery for short electric-only trips, and when it runs flat the car carries on as a regular petrol hybrid. The electric-only range is the bit that matters, and on paper it is usually between 40 and 90km before the petrol takes over.
Note “on paper”. We come back to that, because it is where a lot of PHEV buyers get a nasty surprise.
The case for a used PHEV in the country
The pitch writes itself. No range anxiety. When the battery is flat you fill up at any servo like you always have, so a 600km run to see the grandkids or a haul out to a property with no charger is a non-event. You still do the daily 30 or 40km on cheap home electricity if you bother to plug in overnight. And it tows: a current Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is rated to tow 1600kg braked, the same as the petrol version, and the engine means towing does not eat into some anxious range calculation.
For a lot of regional drivers, that is genuinely the right answer. Here is the catch nobody selling you the PHEV mentions.
You only get the EV benefit if you actually plug it in. This is not a lecture, it is maths. A Fraunhofer study of nearly a million European plug-in hybrids, reported by The Driven, found real-world fuel use of about 5.9 litres per 100km, roughly three times the 1.6 to 1.7 litres official testing assumes. Drive a PHEV around with a flat battery and you lug a heavy pack you never use, burning far more fuel than an equivalent normal hybrid would. The 1.5L/100km sticker is a lab fantasy for someone who charges religiously and never leaves town.
The real electric range is modest, and on a used one it is smaller still. The current-generation Outlander PHEV claims around 84km of electric-only range on the NEDC lab test, the older and generous official economy rating. But most used PHEVs in your price range are the older shape. A pre-2022 Outlander PHEV was rated near 54km on the same NEDC test, with owners seeing closer to 30 to 45km in the real world. Fine for a school run. Not much use on a country commute that is longer than most.
And you are servicing two drivetrains. A PHEV still has engine oil, filters, spark plugs and an exhaust, plus the electric side. More to go wrong and more to pay for than a pure EV, which has none of that.
The case for a used BEV in the country
The used EV wins on running cost, and it is not close. CarsGuide, citing Electric Vehicle Council figures, puts a 15,000km year at about $2,160 in petrol (roughly 14c per kilometre) against around $600 in home electricity (about 4c), a fuel saving near $1,500 a year. Country living actually stacks the deck for the EV: you almost certainly have off-street parking, plenty of you have rooftop solar, and daytime charging off your own panels is about as cheap as motoring gets.

Servicing is cheaper too, for the reason above: no oil, no spark plugs, no timing belt, no exhaust. Fewer moving parts, fewer bills.
So who is the used BEV for? The driver whose life is mostly local: town runs, the commute, the sport drop-offs, with the occasional longer trip you can plan. If that is you, a used EV saves you real money every single week, not just on the days you remember to charge.
The catch is real. Long remote runs and heavy towing are where a BEV works hardest. Towing collapses range: WhichCar notes an EV can lose 40 to 50% of its range with a caravan or heavy trailer hooked up. A 400km EV towing a van into a headwind is suddenly a 200km EV, and out past the black stump the fast chargers are not close enough together to make that relaxing.
Used pricing: which is actually better value right now
This is where it gets interesting. The used BEV is already cheaper to run, and right now it is also cheaper to buy than it has any right to be.
Used electric cars have depreciated hard in Australia. Research tracked by EV Central found the average used Tesla Model 3 list price fell from $65,990 in January 2023 to $46,705 by December 2024, about a 30% drop, with the BYD Atto 3 down 29% (from $51,990 to $36,990) and the MG ZS EV falling from $48,071 to $34,300 over the same window. Painful if you bought new. A gift if you are buying used. At the time of writing, early Model 3s from 2019 and 2020 are listed from around $34,000.

PHEVs have held their money better, which sounds like a plus until you realise it means you pay more for the privilege. A used Outlander PHEV, the default choice for most Australian PHEV shoppers, sits in roughly the mid-$30,000s for a well-kept 2021 Exceed. So for similar money you can have a used mid-size electric sedan that costs a third as much per kilometre to run, or a used plug-in hybrid SUV that costs more to run and more to service but never needs a charger.
Over a few years of country kilometres, the BEV usually wins on total cost comfortably, as long as your driving pattern suits it. The PHEV only closes that gap if you charge every night and keep your trips inside its modest electric range, and even then it carries the running-cost penalty of an engine you are trying not to use.
The towing and remote question that actually decides it
Strip away the noise and it comes down to one thing for most country buyers: what do your worst-case trips look like?
Not your average Tuesday. Your worst case. The 700km dash to a funeral. The van towed 300km to the coast every summer. The run to a mate’s property where the nearest DC charger is a rumour. If those trips are a regular, non-negotiable part of your life, the PHEV’s petrol backup is worth paying for, and I am not going to pretend otherwise.
But be honest about how often the worst case actually happens. Plenty of people buy a PHEV for the two trips a year they tow, then spend the other 363 days paying to move dead weight around town. If your long, remote, heavily-loaded trips are rare enough to plan around, a used BEV plus the occasional hire car or overnight charging stop is cheaper over a year than owning the compromise full time.
Which one suits your kind of driving
Here is the verdict, no fence-sitting.
If you tow long and remote on the regular, buy the used PHEV. The petrol backup earns its keep, towing does not trigger a range panic, and you never plan a trip around a charger. Accept that it costs more to run and service, charge it every night to claw some of that back, and do not kid yourself about the 1.5L/100km sticker.
If you charge at home and drive mostly local, buy the used BEV and pocket the difference. It is cheaper to buy right now thanks to brutal depreciation, cheaper to run at roughly 4c per kilometre against 14c for petrol, and cheaper to service. For the two or three big trips a year where it struggles, plan the charging or borrow something. You will still be thousands ahead.
The one buyer who should not touch either: someone who wants a PHEV “for the fuel savings” but has nowhere to plug it in. That is the worst of both worlds. You pay the PHEV premium and get petrol-hybrid economy that the Fraunhofer data shows can be worse than a normal hybrid. If you cannot charge at home, the maths breaks. Sort the plug first, then pick the car.
