
If you’re shopping the cheap end of the used EV market in Australia, you’ll keep bumping into one acronym that everyone else seems to have moved past: CHAdeMO. The CHAdeMO vs CCS Australia question matters because it decides which public fast chargers your prospective car can actually plug into, and how fast it’ll charge in five years’ time. It also decides whether the bargain Leaf in the classifieds is genuinely a bargain or a slow-burning headache.
The short version: CCS2 is the Australian standard, CHAdeMO is on the way out, and the gap between them widens every year. That doesn’t automatically rule out a CHAdeMO car. It does mean you go in with your eyes open.
The basics: what these two ports actually are
Both CHAdeMO and CCS (Combined Charging System, “Combo 2” in Australia) are DC fast charging standards. They handle the high-power “fill it up in 30 minutes” charging at public stations, not your home wallbox. Home AC charging in Australia uses the universal Type 2 port, which is a separate matter.
The two standards work in fundamentally different ways. CHAdeMO uses a separate dedicated port. CCS2 cleverly piggy-backs onto the same Type 2 socket by adding two extra DC pins below it, so a single port handles both AC and DC charging. The locking mechanism differs too: CCS2 has the car drive a pin through a hole in the plug to lock it; CHAdeMO has the charger lock the handle. That’s why a passive adapter doesn’t really work between them. The protocols are different all the way down.
Which used EVs use which port?
In 2026 the CHAdeMO market in Australia is small, old, and mostly Japanese:
- Nissan Leaf: both Gen 1 (2010 to 2017, the rounded “frog” shape) and Gen 2 (2018 to present, the angular ZE1) use CHAdeMO for DC and Type 1 (J1772) or Type 2 for AC. Gen 1 is Type 1; Gen 2 is Type 2.
- Mitsubishi i-MiEV: old, rare, slow. CHAdeMO + Type 1.
- Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (pre-2023): yes, it’s a plug-in hybrid, not a full EV, but it uses CHAdeMO for its DC charging.
- Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV: same as the Outlander, CHAdeMO DC.
- Lexus UX300e: niche, low volume, but CHAdeMO-equipped.
That’s basically the entire CHAdeMO catalogue in Australia. Per the Australian Electric Vehicle Association, only four current models on sale use CHAdeMO, and Nissan’s switched the new Leaf away from it for the next generation.
Everything else uses CCS2: every Tesla sold in Australia, the entire BYD range (Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal), Hyundai Ioniq 5/6/9, Kia EV6/EV9/Niro, MG ZS EV / MG4, Polestar 2, Volvo XC40 / EX30 / EX40, BMW i4 / iX, Mercedes EQA / EQE / EQS, Audi e-tron, Volkswagen ID.4 / ID.5, Renault Megane E-Tech, GWM Ora, Zeekr X, the lot. No new EV sold in Australia from 2022 onwards uses CHAdeMO for DC fast charging.
Is the CHAdeMO network actually dying?
Not overnight, but it’s clearly contracting. The current state of play:
- Chargefox still operates plenty of CHAdeMO-equipped sites; most of their older Tritium-built dual-standard stalls have both connectors.
- Evie Networks uses Tritium hardware too and offers both CCS and CHAdeMO connectors at most existing sites.
- Tesla Superchargers are CCS2-only in Australia. Some older sites had CHAdeMO adapters, but they’re effectively unavailable for non-Tesla CHAdeMO cars.
- NSW and Queensland’s recent government-funded fast-charger rollouts generally don’t require CHAdeMO. The new sites are CCS2-only.
- Newer, higher-power stations (150 kW+, especially the 350 kW units) are almost universally CCS2-only. CHAdeMO can’t physically deliver more than 100 kW at most current sites.
Existing CHAdeMO connectors will keep working for years yet. Operators don’t rip them out; they just stop installing new ones. But the share of total fast-charging capacity that a CHAdeMO car can access shrinks every quarter, and you’ll find yourself driving past 350 kW CCS2-only stations to reach an older, slower dual-standard one.
What about adapters?
For years there was no consumer adapter between CCS2 and CHAdeMO. That changed recently: a couple of CCS2-to-CHAdeMO adapters are now sold in Australia for around $1,500 to $2,500. They let a CHAdeMO car (typically a Leaf) plug into a CCS2 station.
The catch: protocol negotiation is fiddly, charging speeds are usually capped well below the station’s maximum, and not every CCS2 station plays nicely. Reports from owners who’ve bought them range from “works most of the time at 50 kW” to “sometimes refuses to start”. Think of one as insurance for a long road trip rather than something you’d rely on every week.
Don’t buy a CHAdeMO EV expecting an adapter to fully solve the network problem. Buy one expecting to use the slowly shrinking CHAdeMO network for almost all your DC charging.
What this means if you’re buying a used Leaf
The Nissan Leaf, in both Gen 1 and Gen 2 form, is by far the most affordable used EV in Australia. Gen 1 imports from Japan are appearing in the classifieds from $14,000 to $20,000. That’s genuinely cheap for an EV, and the CHAdeMO question is the single biggest reason the price is so low.
Whether that’s still a good buy depends on how you’ll use the car:
- Almost always charge at home, rarely fast charge? CHAdeMO doesn’t matter. Charge overnight at 2 to 7 kW, take long trips occasionally, and use the dual-standard Chargefox/Evie sites that exist today. Fine.
- Live regional, road-trip frequently, depend on fast chargers? Be cautious. The Leaf’s small battery (24 to 40 kWh on most used models) plus a shrinking CHAdeMO network is a frustrating combination. Test the route you’d actually drive on PlugShare before you buy.
- Want one used EV to last 10+ years? Buy a CCS2 car. The infrastructure investment is going there, and a 2022 Tesla Model 3 or BYD Atto 3 isn’t much more than a Leaf in 2026.
What this means if you’re buying a used Outlander or Eclipse Cross PHEV
The CHAdeMO port on a Mitsubishi PHEV matters less than on a Leaf, because the petrol engine is the long-distance backup. If a fast charger isn’t available, you just use petrol like a normal car. The CHAdeMO port is there for the occasional 30-minute top-up, nothing more. Don’t let it scare you off a used Outlander PHEV. The bigger questions there are battery health and the well-documented regen-braking quirks.
Is CCS2 worth the price gap?
If you’re cross-shopping a 2019 Leaf at $20,000 against a 2021 BYD Atto 3 at $32,000, the connector difference is real and worth paying for. CCS2 future-proofs you for the next decade of Australian fast-charging buildout, and the price gap between the cheapest CHAdeMO and CCS2 cars is narrower than it looks once you factor in how much faster you’ll actually charge.
That said, the Leaf is still a fantastic city car for the right buyer. Just don’t pretend the CHAdeMO question doesn’t exist. Plan for home charging to do 95%+ of your kilometres, and treat DC fast charging as a road-trip thing rather than part of your routine.
