The used Tesla Model 3 is the hottest second-hand EV in Australia right now, and it’s not hard to see why. It’s the car that brought mainstream electric motoring to this country, and with early models now listed on Carsales from around $30,000, the maths is getting hard to ignore.

But not every used Model 3 is a good buy. The variant you choose, the year it was built, and how the previous owner treated it all matter. We’ve pulled together the research so you know exactly what to look for.

Which variant should you buy?

Tesla has sold several Model 3 variants in Australia since deliveries began in mid-2019, and they’re not all equally good used buys.

Standard Range Plus (SR+) / RWD

This is the value pick, and the one most used buyers should be looking at. The SR+ uses a rear-wheel-drive single motor setup and an LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery with around 60kWh of capacity. Real-world range sits around 350 to 400km depending on driving style and conditions, which is plenty for daily driving and most weekend trips.

The LFP battery is a bonus for used buyers. According to Tesla’s own charging guidance, LFP batteries can be charged to 100% regularly without the degradation concerns of the NMC chemistry in the Long Range models. That makes daily ownership simpler.

Long Range (LR) AWD

The Long Range adds a second motor for all-wheel drive and swaps to an NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) battery with about 80kWh of capacity. Real-world range is around 450 to 500km, and the dual motors give noticeably better acceleration and wet-weather traction.

It’s the better road trip car, but you’ll pay a premium on the used market (typically $5,000 to $10,000 more than an equivalent SR+), and the NMC battery is best kept between 20 and 80% charge for longevity.

Performance

The Performance model is a genuine sports sedan that happens to be electric. It’ll embarrass cars costing twice as much in a straight line. But for used buyers, there are a few things to watch: previous owners tend to enjoy the acceleration (check the tyres), the lowered suspension can be harsh on Australian roads, and the bigger brakes cost more to service.

Unless you specifically want a fast car, the Long Range gives you 90% of the Performance experience for a lot less money.

Used Tesla Model 3 pricing in Australia

As of early 2026, here’s roughly what you can expect to pay based on current listings across CarsGuide and other major marketplaces:

  • 2019 to 2020 SR+: $28,000 to $36,000
  • 2021 to 2022 SR+/RWD: $32,000 to $42,000
  • 2019 to 2020 Long Range: $33,000 to $44,000
  • 2021 to 2022 Long Range: $39,000 to $52,000
  • Performance (any year): $37,000 to $55,000

These prices are moving targets. They’ve been trending downwards as more stock enters the market and new Model 3 prices have come down. That’s good news for used buyers, but it also means the car you buy today will likely be worth less in 12 months. Buy to drive, not to invest.

Battery health: the big question

This is what everyone worries about, and Model 3 batteries are holding up better than most people expect.

According to Tesla’s own data reported by InsideEVs, Model 3 and Model Y Long Range packs average just 15% capacity loss after 200,000 miles (roughly 320,000km). That means 85% capacity retention, and most Australian used buyers will be looking at cars with far fewer kilometres than that.

The degradation curve is steepest in the first 20,000 to 30,000km (you might see 5 to 8% loss), then it flattens out dramatically. A car with 80,000km on the clock may have lost about the same amount of range as one with 200,000km.

Frequent Supercharging does accelerate degradation. If more than half the car’s charging has been on DC fast chargers, studies suggest roughly 10 to 15% more degradation over 160,000km compared to mostly home charging. Ask the seller about their charging habits.

What to do: Get a battery health check before buying. The NRMA EV Battery Health Check costs $150 for members ($200 for non-members) and gives you a score out of 100 with detailed capacity metrics. Other options include TestMyEV (which uses the European-certified AVILOO system) and TestEV (from $175). Anything above 88% State of Health (SOH) on a car under 100,000km is perfectly normal. Below 85%, negotiate the price down.

Common problems to watch for

The Model 3 is generally reliable, but these are the known issues worth checking during an inspection.

Panel gaps and paint

Early Australian deliveries (2019 to 2020) had inconsistent build quality. Panel gaps can be uneven, and the paint (particularly on white cars) is notoriously thin. Look for chips, touch-up paint, and check that the door gaps are even on both sides. This is mostly cosmetic, but it tells you about the car’s history and the previous owner’s standards.

Suspension clunks

Pre-2021 Model 3s have a known issue with the front lower control arm bushings tearing around 60,000 to 110,000km. You’ll hear it as a clunk over bumps, especially at low speed. It’s a fixable problem (about $500 to $800 at a Tesla Service Centre), but it’s worth knowing about so you can negotiate if you hear it during a test drive.

MCU screen yellowing

Some early Model 3s develop a yellow tinge around the edges of the centre touchscreen. It’s caused by UV exposure and heat degrading the adhesive between the glass and the display. It doesn’t affect functionality, but it’s annoying. Tesla has rolled out a UV treatment fix at service centres, though results can be mixed. Check by displaying a white screen and looking at the edges.

Windscreen cracking

The Model 3’s windscreen is large, raked, and prone to cracking from stone chips. It’s not a manufacturing defect, but replacements are expensive ($800 to $1,200 through Tesla) and aftermarket options are limited. Check for existing chips or cracks, especially along the bottom edge.

Warranty: what transfers to used buyers

According to Tesla Australia’s warranty page, the warranty transfers to subsequent owners automatically. There’s no fee and no special paperwork beyond the ownership transfer through Tesla’s system. With a used Model 3 you get:

  • Vehicle warranty: 4 years or 80,000km from original delivery (whichever comes first)
  • Battery and drive unit: 8 years or 160,000km (SR+/RWD) or 192,000km (Long Range/Performance), with a guarantee of at least 70% capacity retention

For a 2021 or 2022 model, the battery warranty runs until 2029 or 2030, so you could buy the car today and still have years of battery coverage left. That’s a real safety net.

Note: from January 2026, new Teslas sold in Australia come with an updated 5-year unlimited kilometre vehicle warranty, but this doesn’t apply retroactively to older models.

Pre-purchase inspection checklist

Before you hand over your money, check these:

  • Battery SOH: Get a professional battery health test (NRMA, TestMyEV, or TestEV; links in the battery section above)
  • Service history: Ask to see the Tesla app, since all service records are digital
  • Panel gaps: Run your finger along door edges, boot, and bonnet gaps
  • Tyres: Check tread depth and whether all four match (Tesla chews through rear tyres)
  • Suspension: Drive over speed bumps at low speed and listen for clunks
  • Screen: Display a white image and check for yellowing at edges
  • Windscreen: Check for chips or cracks, especially along the bottom edge
  • Charging port: Test both home charging and Supercharging if possible
  • Software version: Make sure it’s running a recent update, because older software can miss safety features

Still the best overall value

The used Tesla Model 3 is the best overall value in the Australian second-hand EV market right now. The battery holds up, the technology still feels current, the Supercharger network is the best in the country, and the warranty transfers to you.

If you’re on a budget, get the SR+/RWD; its LFP battery suits used ownership better anyway. If you want more range and all-wheel drive, stretch to the Long Range. Skip the Performance unless you specifically want a fast car and accept the higher running costs.

Just do the battery health check, listen for that suspension clunk, and don’t pay more than the car is worth in a falling market. Get those right, and you’ll be driving one of the best electric cars ever made for a fraction of the original price.
